Last month, while I was engrossed in the TV series Sense8 and Scandal (Yes, I do not finish it yet), a friend of mine insisted that I start watching a new series called ‘Designated Survivor’. When I heard the name of the series, I assumed initially that the show would be about war or that kind of things. I was pleasantly surprised to find that it was not like that at all.
Everything starts with a terrorist attack that kills many prominent members of the United States government. The designated survivor, Tom Kirkman (Kiefer Sutherland), Secretary of housing and urban development is chosen as President. From that moment, his life changes and he faces many obstacles while he governs.
The series is quite dramatic, although, it covers many topics that one may encounter in real life.
Personally, this series made me get interested in politic sciences. Yes, I know, you should be thinking that I take the drama too seriously, but it just woke up my interest on it, and is not like I see myself as a cadidate for a political position but maybe as a political advisor because in backstage is where everything happens. Now, talking seriously, let’s just leave it like that, just as a thought.
If you have the time to watch it, I sincerely suggest that you do. The first season ended recently on Netflix. The new season will start in fall.

A inicio del mes pasado, mientras estaba enganchado con Sense8 y Scandal (Sí, aun no la termino), una amiga me recomendaba insistentemente ver el “Sobreviviente Designado”. Al escuchar el nombre de esta serie, la primera idea que tuve en mente sobre cómo podría ser fue que se tratara de militares en la guerra o algo parecido, pero no es así.
La serie inicia con un terrible atentado terrorista que deja muertos a casi todos los líderes del gabinete del gobierno de Estados Unidos, dejando como presidente al superviviente designado, Tom Kirkman (Kiefer Sutherland), secretario de vivienda y desarrollo urbano. A partir de ese momento su vida cambia rotundamente y pasa por varios obstáculos mientras gobierna.
Si bien es cierto es un drama, la serie toca temas que no escapan de la vida real y que vemos con frecuencia en los noticieros del mundo.
En lo personal, la serie abrió mi interés hacia las ciencias políticas. Sí lo sé, debes estar pensado que me he dejado llevar por el drama, pero simplemente despertó mi interés, no en específico al frente de una candidatura política, sino en “backstage” donde realmente suceden y se resuelven las situaciones. Comparándola con mi experiencia, queda solo en eso, es un llamado de atención y nada más.
Te recomiendo que si tienes la oportunidad la veas. La primera temporada terminó hace tres días y está disponible en Netflix. Estoy ansioso de ver la nueva temporada que estrenará en el otoño por ABC.
